Record Breaking Welsh Cake

Guinness for the Bala Welsh Cake

Earlier this year we featured a blog story about a fabulous group of people in the nearby town of Bala, who’d baked a giant Welsh cake hoping for an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records (read the story here) and we’ve just heard the news this week that they’ve only gone and done it!! It’s official; theirs was a record breaking Welsh Cake!

That means that the team (from Bala and Penllyn Tourism Association and the local school Ysgol y Berwyn) have officially baked the world’s largest Welsh Cake! The giant cake weighed in at a whopping 21.7 kg (that’s almost 3 and a half stone!) and measured a 1.5 metres in diameter…. (almost 5 feet!).

The record breaking Welsh Cake was baked on St Davids day to celebrate all things Welsh. When it was cooked it was cut up into 200 pieces and sold off for charity.

Huge congratulations to the whole team, and to the lovely little town of Bala. What a fantastic achievement, and what a brilliant way to enter the record books – with a record breaking Welsh cake. Delicious!
