Here at the Oakeley Arms, we’re lucky to live right on the edge of beautiful Snowdonia, and since there’s been a hint of Spring in the air, it made us think about all the lovely wild flowers that are busy blooming and growing and pushing their way through the winter earth in time for the warmer weather.

If you’re lucky enough to visit us this Spring, then do look out for these gorgeous Snowdonia flowers out in the wild. They are stunning in all their quiet beauty….

• Bluebell – these pretty, pale blue flowers are common across Britain, but witnessing a carpet of them across woodland floors is still a breathtaking sight. They can also be found along the coastline too.
• Snowdon Lily – one of Snowdonia’s gems, the delicate white flowers of the Snowdon Lily blossom in June.

• Broom – A form of evergreen shrub that flowers small yellow bursts. It thrives in the acidic soil found across Snowdonia and loves open mountainous areas.

• Dog Violet – this pretty purple flower thrives in boggy ground and wet rock crevices – it loves damp weather so you’ll find it all over Snowdonia!
• Globe Flower – the  yellow petals of this plant curl around, looking like small ball, giving the flower it’s name. It sits on top of tall stalk, and it’s common across North Wales.

• Gorse – one of the most familiar plants across the country, they are characterised by their spiky green leaves, with small yellow flowers at the tip in spring and summer. They also have a distinctive smell, which for many people evokes childhood memories of being allowed to roam free in the wilds of Snowdonia.

• Knapweed – another common plant in the region, especially in the lowland areas. These purple flowers with feathery petals are very hardy and robust so are suited to our somewhat chilly climate!
• Foxgloves – these iconically British flowers thrive in acidic soils so are perfect for our Snowdonian soil.
