Be Safe on Snowdon

Mountain Safety
The Oakeley Arms is just a stone’s throw from Wales’ highest peak, Snowdon. Many of our visitors and guests come to conquer this majestic mountain and to witness the absolutely stunning view from the top on a sunny day (very hard to beat!). So it’s no surprise that this beautiful peak is attracting more visitors than ever before, and although many people think that Snowdon is one of the most accessible mountains in the Snowdonia range, this lovely mountain still needs to be approached with care and consideration.
A recent news report from the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) has showed great concern that many of Snowdon’s half a million annual visitors are woefully under prepared for a hike to the summit. Being unprepared for bad weather, changing conditions, getting lost or becoming ill or injured are the main reasons that the local Mountain Rescue team in Llanberis are called out.
So, if you’re planning a walk up Snowdon during your stay in North Wales, then make sure you can be safe on Snowdon. Follow these guidelines below, from Snowdonia National Park authority, for safety on the hills.
- Consult a map to plan your route before you start and choose a route that isn’t beyond the capabilities of anyone in your group.
- Tell someone (who isn’t going with you) where you’re going, which route you plan to take and when you think you’ll be back. They can raise the alarm in the unlikely event that you get into difficulty and don’t return as planned.
- Make sure you have a fully charged mobile phone with you. You may not get a signal in all areas, but there’s nothing more annoying than trying to call for help with a flat battery!
- Pack appropriately – wearing layers is the best thing because you can easily take them on and off as you get hotter or colder. Don’t forget to take waterproofs and warm clothes, even if it’s sunny when you start – weather conditions can change quickly. Also don’t forget to pack a basic first aid kit, torch, plenty of water and snacks.
- Wear comfortable and supportive footwear – you’d be surprised at the number of walkers who attempt a Snowdonia summit in flip-flops. These won’t protect your feet and ankles and you’re much more likely to trip or slip.
- Don’t forget to take your map and compass with you (and know how to use them!).
- Check the weather forecast before you head out. And don’t be afraid to change your plans if the weather looks set to turn. You can always try again another time if you’re in any doubt.
- Once you’re on the hill, stick to your planned route. Don’t veer far off the path to look for wildlife/caves etc, and don’t follow other people blindly – they could be more experienced or prepared than you are.
- And don’t forget to have fun! The vast majority of walkers enjoy a fun-filled and satisfying day out on the hills. Just think sensibly and plan ahead, and you too will be safe on Snowdon.
