Stay Storm Safe

The last week has seen some of the worst storms in living memory to hit the UK, and here at the Oakeley Arms we’re wishing that all our neighbours, friends and colleagues stay safe. The west coast of Wales has been particularly affected by the January storms, with widespread flooding across coastal areas including towns not far from us here at the Oakeley like Barmouth, Criccieth and Aberystwyth. Extremely high tides were pushed over sea defences by gale force winds and strong rain.

And sadly, the January storms aren’t over yet. With more bad weather on the way, along with ice and possibly snow as the temperatures plummet the stormy start to the new year is set to continue. It’s certainly wild out there, so here are our top tips for keeping you and your loved ones safe during this unsettled time…..

• When the storms are at their worst, stay indoors and don’t venture outside unless it’s absolutely necessary….
• Stay away from coastal areas, especially coast paths and sections of the coast without any sea defences. Waves can come seemingly from nowhere and easily sweep an adult of their feet.
• If you really want to venture out to catch a glimpse of the ferocious seas then keep to well-populated areas with good sea walls. Stay in a group and be sensible about retreating if it starts to get wild.
• Definitely do not go swimming, sailing, surfing, rowing or kayaking in a storm. Stay away from the sea, no matter how tempting the waves look.
• Before the storm hits try to make your home secure. Fasten down or put away loose objects in the garden like furniture, hammocks and ladders. If necessary, secure garage doors and park your car away from trees, lamp-posts and walls.
• Don’t try to go outside and repair damage to your property while the storm is in full swing. Shelter indoors and wait until it has subsided.
• Try to avoid driving over exposed roads such as mountain tops or open bridges.
• Help any elderly or vulnerable neighbours to feel safe by inviting them to shelter with you, or popping round afterwards to check they are ok.
