Hello Doctor

Last weekend, fans across the world celebrated the birthday of one of the world’s most celebrated doctors. Doctor Who  is the world’s longest running science-fiction television series (according to the Guinness Book Of Records); it was first broadcast on the 23rd November 1963 so this year marks Doctor Who’s 50th birthday.

The show chronicles the adventures of a clever but eccentric alien time-traveller who explores the world in a rather wobbly time-machine, the tardis. He usually has a human companion to help (and sometimes hinder) his adventures, and of course there are plenty of enemies and monsters thrown in for good measure; the most famous being the ubiquitous daleks, who attempt to thwart the Doctor’s travels and adventures, to their famous tinny cries of “exterminate, exterminate!”

In 2005, the Doctor returned to our screens with a new series, this this time penned and produced by Welsh screenwriter Russell T. Davies. Since its reincarnation, Doctor Who has been an enormous success for the BBC and has attracted not only big audiences, but big stars too. Christopher Ecclestone, David Tenant, Billy Piper, John Barrowman and Catherine Tate have all had roles in the show.

And not only that, but the show proudly has links here to Wales. Production of the show has moved permanently to studios in Cardiff, so locations in and around the city, and across all of South Wales, are often used in the hit series. Eagle eye viewers might be able to spot Margam Country Park, Caerphilly Castle, Whitmore Bay, Tredegar House and Rhossili Bay, which are all famous South Wales landmarks that have starred alongside the Doctor.

But sadly, the famous Doctor himself has never been played by a Welsh actor, boohooooo!
