British Pie Week 2015

March 3rd, 2015

The Oakeley Arms is calling all Pie lovers!! We’re celebrating British Pie Week 2015 here at the Oakeley Arms this week, and we’ve got some treats in store for you!

Britain is officially a nation of pie lovers – a good old home-made pie is a national treasure. And whether it’s steak and kidney, mince and onion or cheese and potato that tickles your fancy, there’s a pie out there to make your taste buds tingle. A survey earlier this year by Jus Rol pastry revealed that 75% of people enjoy a pie at least once a month, so it seems the great British pie is here to stay!

It’s thought that the humble pie was first invented to keep the meat and vegetables inside it fresh, and the neat pastry case kept everything contained, so a pie was the perfect nutritious meal for long journeys, particularly at sea. The Ancient Greeks lay claim to having invented the first pastry pie, and although there are different variations all over the world us Brits have really taken the pie into our hearts as a favourite dish.
