Last time on the Oakeley blog we delved into the history of the region’s AONBs (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty), so today we thought we’d feature a beautiful Anglesey AONB walk, so that you can explore more of the region’s most stunning places……

Where:              Church Bay, Anglesey

Distance:          Approx 6 miles

Difficulty:          Fairly easy – coastal paths and country lanes

Start:                Church Bay Car Park (A55 to junction 3 for the A5, then follow the A5025 through Llanfachreth and at Llanfaethlu follow signs to left for Church Bay/Porth Swtan)

Directions:

1: From car park head towards sea; through gate and along headland. At a junction, keep left keeping to coast.

2: At a stile to right, climb over and continue ahead.

3: After just over half a mile (approx) path will head up to cairn. Follow steep path downhill and at bridge, cross over, then take smaller path keeping to left and to the cliff top.

4: Path rounds headland of Trwyn y Crewyn, and Ynys y Fydlyn is ahead. The island is accessible at low tides, but great care must be taken at all times. Look to east from the beach to see a track heading to right of small, boggy lake. Follow the track, keeping to side of forest.

5: At road turn left, then after approx 200 yards turn right onto track for Hendy Farm and pass through gate.

6: Follow path around pond and head for white gate ahead. Go through and into another farm. Head around back of the building on left and through a gate into field. Go up to far corner of field to the road. Turn right.

7: After approx 330 yards, take footpath to left. Keep to left of Mynydd y Garn, then turn right across the lower part of the peak. Follow path back to road, then turn left.

8: Keep ahead as a road joins from right and at next fork turn right. Follow this road all the way back to Porth Swtan, turning right back to car park.

Did you know……?

• Bwthyn Swtan is a traditional 16^th century Welsh cottage at Porth Swtan that is preserved by Cyfeillion Swtan (Friends of Swtan). It is the last thatched cottage on Anglesey, and was occupied until 1975. The cottage was completely renovated in 1999. It is now run as a museum and heritage centre and is laid out as it would have been at the turn of the twentieth century.
