Welsh Coast Path Walk in Rhyl

July 21st, 2019

Earlier this week on the blog we explored some long walks on the Welsh Coast Path. Here’s your chance to explore the bustling coastline of North Wales with our linear walk from Rhos-on-Sea to Rhyl with an 11 mile stroll.

Where:              Rhos-on-Sea

Distance:          Approx 11.5 miles

Difficulty:          Hard

Start:                Rhos-on-Sea Tourist Information Centre, Promenade, Rhos-on-Sea (park on the promenade roadside). Postcode for sat nav is LL28 4PP (approx).

Grid Ref:           SH 842 804

Maps:               OS Explorer OL17: Snowdon

1: Looking towards the sea and the TIC, bear right to walk along the promenade. Continue along the easy route (the North Wales Path) for just over a mile, and you’ll see Colwyn Bay Pier on the left. Continue along the path for another mile.

2: The promenade passes under the railway line but you need to veer off to the left on a path marked for cyclists. Follow this path now and in ½ a mile or so you’ll pass the huge sea defence stones on the left. Keep walking along the easy well-signed route, this time for almost two miles.

3: Now cross the bridge and follow the path for 600 yards or so and now follow the tarmac path for over two miles; passing a new bridge and then an older derelict bridge. Continue along the tarmac path, soon coming to Pensarn.

4: Continue ahead along the North Wales Path to soon pass the Pensarn & Abergele station, and follow the path as it continues between the railway line and wall. You can choose to continue along the path, or if the tide is out you can walk along the beach. It’s just over half a mile to Rhyl.

5: Look out for some toilets and shelters painted blue and leave the beach here. Walk ahead towards the supermarket, but don’t pass it. Bear left through the beach car park and then through a kissing gate and onto the dunes. At the path junction turn right then through gate by bungalows.

6: Bear slightly right to keep your direction and walk down Betws Avenue then turn left for Bryn Avenue. At the road end, turn right, and past the pub. Turn left and follow the road towards the bridge (not immediately left past boatyard).

7: Cross bridge and pass Rhyl signpost. At roundabout go straight ahead (not left for promenade). Walk along the road with Marine Lake to right and pass the miniature railway station. Keep ahead, passing supermarket and soon more shops.

8: At traffic lights with Catholic Church on right, stay ahead and continue to walk until you pass police station and bank on right near another set of traffic lights. Turn right here for Bodfor Street and walk to its end to reach the bus station on the left.
