Small Business, Big Dreams

Here at the Oakeley Arms we are always rooting for small, local businesses like ourselves so we were fascinated to read about the results of a recent study by The Federation of Small Businesses in Wales (FSB Wales)

In a research programme that interviewed over 200 school and university students in Wales, the FSB Wales found that although many younger children aged 11-13 had big ambitions to become the next Alan Sugar and set up their own business, the figure had fallen to just 18% by the time pupils had become 18 years old.

The FSB Wales undertook the study after it found that the rate for small business start up was fewer in Wales than it was across the UK (42 start-ups per 10,000 of the population in Wales, compared to a UK average of 64). It believes that good entrepreneurial education at a young age along with helpful, practical advice will help to counter-act the shortfall and encourage more young people to turn their bright ideas into viable business plans. The FSB believes that this is especially important at a time when jobs with good prospects for young people are at an all-time low.
