In 2011, we wrote about the plight of a local cinema to the Oakeley Arms, and the determined group of campaigners who are fighting to save it. You can read our original story here, but we’ve recently heard news that the campaign to save the vintage cinema has moved to the next level.

Porthmadog’s Coliseum Cinema was first opened in 1931, and since then it has been host to thousands of block-busters, social events and even a film premier (of the Hollywood film First Knight that was filmed locally in 1995). But sadly, a couple of years ago, the historic building was faced with permanent closure due to spiraling maintenance bills and a drop in audience figures. The Friends of the Coliseum was quickly formed in a bid to save the cinema for future generations of Porthmadog film lovers.

This month, the Friends of the Coliseum announced that they were able to move forward with their bid to save the historic cinema. They now have all the details and everything ready to apply for the grant they need to provide vital funds. The grant application includes drawings for renovation and a business plan for the future success of the venue.

Let’s keep all fingers crossed that this beautiful Porthmadog landmark will be brought back to life and be restored, renovated and re-loved for us all.
