If you’re looking for something to do this weekend that’ll be fun for the whole family, then why not head up to the coast at nearby Conwy for RSPB Conwy’s 20th Birthday celebrations?

This RSPB site is one of several in the area, but it’s extra special because it was built up from waste that came from the construction of the A55 expressway that was built across the north Wales coastline in the mid 1990s. So although there was huge destruction to wild habitats during the building of the road, the resulting waste and devastation was turned into something incredibly positive.

The nature reserve at Conwy is now celebrating its 20th birthday and it’s become a true haven of peace, tranquility and wildlife. Over 220 bird species have been recorded at the reserve and animal species resident there include otters, stoats, weasels and a whopping twenty two different types of butterfly.

RSPB Conwy’s 20th birthday celebrations will kick off this weekend (Sat 25th July) when none other than the legendary Iolo Williams will open the event. Iolo is one of Wales’ most loved wildlife television presenters and ecologists, so the RSPB Reserve at Conwy is very close to his heart.

So as well as the opportunity to meet Iolo, there’ll be plenty for the whole family to do. From getting up close and personal with some of the nature and wildlife to bird-ringing displays, talks and events like pond-dipping, musical performances and live theatre.

The Big Birthday Weekend will open at 10am-4.15pm on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July at RSPB Conwy nature reserve, just off the A55 in Llandudno Junction LL31 9XZ.
