Celebrate our Mums

This weekend is Mother’s Day, and here at the Oakeley Arms holiday cottages in Snowdonia, we think our mums are a big reason to celebrate!

The tradition of honouring our mums on mother’s day dates back about a hundred years to a trend that began in the USA, although of course the Christian tradition of Mothering Sunday and the even older customs in pagan and Greek cultures are also closely linked to the celebration across the world of mummies.

In 1908 Anna Jarvis from West Virginia held a celebration and remembrance for her own mother one Sunday in May and soon began campaigning for a formally recognised holiday for mothers. It wasn’t long before her campaign was successful, and Mother’s Day was adopted around the world, albeit on differing months and days. In Britain it was combined with the existing Mothering Sunday, and today, Mother’s Day in the UK is always celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent.

So, grab your mummies this weekend and tell them how special they really are. And its part of the tradition on Mother’s Day to give flowers and gifts to your special mum so don’t forget the card!
