UFO tales from Wales

So, have you ever spotted a weird sighting in the sky? Flashing lights, giant saucers and little green men where they shouldn’t be? No, can’t say we have either (well, not before a trip to the Oakeley bar anyway….), but according to data just released by the Ministry of Defence, UFO sightings have been rife across Wales for the last couple of years.

The MOD once had a dedicated UFO desk and helpline to deal with public sightings of alleged UFOs and alien encounters, but it was closed down in 2009 after the government decided it wasn’t a strong part of the country’s national defence programme. This month, many of the files of the investigations from the UFO desk were released by the National Archive, and it turns out that our beautiful little country has been an alleged alien hotspot for many years. Beings from other planets obviously think it’s fairly beautiful too!

Some of the weirder incidents include claims from a power plant worker on Anglesey in 1977 that a ball of light burst into his living room and sat on his armchair, a camper in Cardiff who claimed his dog, tent and car had been kidnapped by aliens in 2007 and several sightings of objects similar to “flying saucers”, some of which date as far back as the 1950s.

And let’s not forget one of the most famous Welsh UFO sightings – the so called “Welsh Roswell” which is claimed to have happened in the Berwyn Mountains in 1974. Witnesses saw several unusual flashing lights in the sky, followed by earth tremors. The police and the RAF searched the mountains, and found nothing so the strange event was put down to an earthquake. However, it wasn’t long before conspiracy theories were flying about – alleging that the government had covered up the true findings on the hills that night and that non-human bodies had been found among the wreckage of a UFO……..
