Bike Week 2014

June 16th, 2014

On ‘yer bike!

This week is Bike Week 2014! And here at the Oakeley Arms we’re pretty excited about it because we are all fans of a two-wheeled adventure.

The idea behind Bike Week 2014 is to get us all thinking about how we can incorporate cycling into our everyday lives. Whether that be cycling to work, jumping on the bike to pick up a pint of milk from the supermarket or as a family day out at the weekend. It’s healthier, greener and cheaper than jumping in the car, and it gets the kids away from the computer games too.

If you fancy getting fit on two wheels then it’s fairly easy to get into the habit of incorporating some cycling into your everyday lifestyle. And Bike Week 2014 isn’t just about promoting the benefits of cycling, but there are also loads of events going on, that you and your family can take part in.

You can find out about the events near you by visiting the Bike Week 2014 website and searching for events.

And in the meantime, if you fancy hopping onto two wheels when you come and stay with us here in Snowdonia, here are our top tips for cycling in our beautiful area…..

  • The Oakeley Arms is very close to Coed-y-Brenin, one of the country’s original and world renowned mountain bike centres. There are loads of things to do in this beautiful forest, from tough trails designed for the mountain biking pro, to family friendly trails for beginners.
  • Why not hire your bike whilst you stay from Beddgelert Bikes? Set in the beautiful Beddgelert Forest (which is also ideal for cycling around when you’ve got your bike!), they can advise on all types of bike and gear. Hire starts from just £15 for 2 hours hire.
  • Just a stone’s throw from the Oakeley Arms is the beautiful Mawddach Trail, one of the area’s favourite cycle routes. On the path of an old railway line, this route follows the beautiful Mawddach Estuary from Dolgellau all the way to the coast at Barmouth. It’s stunning, and all off-road, which makes it great for all the family.
  • And if you’re after something with a bit more adrenalin, then why not try the Antur ‘Stiniog Mountain Bike Centre at nearby Blaenau Ffestiniog? These clever mountain bike trails offer stunning off-road mountain biking along one of the most historic landscapes in the area – disused slate tips and heaps. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but it is loads of fun!
  • You can find details of some of the most popular the dedicated “Lon Las” (Blue Routes) cycle trails in Gwynedd by clicking here.
