Earlier in the week on the Oakeley blog we featured a post all about the glorious Snowdonia Sunrise. Well here’s your chance to see it in all it’s glory, with this beautiful Beddgelert Sunrise Walk. You’ll need to leave the village about 90 minutes before sunrise to catch the dawn at the top of the valley – one of the finest places to see it. This could mean an early start but choose a forecasted nice, clear day, pack a picnic breakfast and it’ll be well worth the walk!
Park either village car park (turn left after Goat Hotel) or free car park the other side – go through village, over bridge and left, then car park on right after Saracen’s Head pub.
Head into village and towards bridge. With Tanronnen Inn on your right, go straight down the road to right of bridge (signposted for Gelert’s Grave).
Pass gift shops with river on your left. Don’t cross river – turn right just before footbridge through gate and follow path alongside river.
To visit Gelert’s Grave, de-tour to right at sign, then re-trace steps, turning right along river to continue.
At end of path cross footbridge on left, then carefully cross over the railway line, turning left to follow path.
This path leads all the way along the river (can be difficult to pass when the river is high).
As you approach Aberglaslyn Bridge, keep to narrow path with some rough steps that heads uphill and to left. Keep following this path then turn right downhill heading for car park (if you reach railway line you’ve gone too far).
At bottom of small hill, go left over stone stile but don’t go into car park. Instead, turn left under railway arch (signposted for Cwm Bychan) and into picnic area.
Head straight through picnic area and up rocky path. Follow this path upwards, eventually crossing the stream and through small gap in wall.
Path will level out onto valley floor with remnants of mining machinery mapping the path.
Keep ahead, aiming through the two hills ahead. After a steep uphill climb cross a stile and onto summit.
Bear left here, aiming for way-marker post a short distance away.
When you reach the post, turn left following signs for Beddgelert and Sygun.
Follow path heading downwards (some parts are very steep and rocky), bearing right through gap in rocks at obvious junction, and following rocky path downhill towards mine.
At bottom of hill, follow signs to mine and pass gift shop and main buildings. Head down to pass children’s play area and turn left here following footpath signs back to village.
Follow road past campsite, don’t deviate until you are almost at the main road. Turn left just before bridge at footpath sign. Follow path alongside river, then through gate bearing slightly right to another footpath between river and houses. Cross green then turn right over bridge and back onto road.
*Parts of this walk are along narrow and rocky paths alongside a fast flowing river, which can become flooded during spells of heavy rain. Walkers with small children and dogs should take the utmost care.
