Secrets of the Skies

Here in Snowdonia we can sometimes have four seasons in one day outside the Oakeley Arms bar, so the subject of the weather is indeed a popular one. There are loads of exciting outdoor activities on offer in our beautiful part of the world but many of them are dependent on the weather; there aren’t many people who enjoy sea-kayaking in a force 8 storm! The weather, what it’s doing, what it’s not, what’s forecast and what’s not are hot topics here in Snowdonia!

So, we were very excited to hear that a fantastic new programme is coming to our television screens that promises to get to the bottom of lots of the unanswered questions we have about the weather, and help us to understand it a little bit more.

Sounds like fascinating stuff! And it means that the UK is at the forefront of meteorological research – well, we do love anything to do with the weather, don’t we! For the programme, BBC2s Cloud Lab, a team of scientists spent a month in one of the world’s largest airships travelling across the width of America to discover answers to questions like, “how much does a cloud weigh?”, “why are there often rain clouds in the sky, even during times of drought?”, and “how on earth do clouds stay in the sky if they are full of heavy water?”.

All these questions and answers will help us all to better understand the Great British weather, which means it’ll hopefully become a little bit more predictable, and perhaps we won’t always have to pack a waterproof when we’re out on the hills, “just in case”! We can live in hope!!
