Thanks Google!

Here at the Oakeley Arms we are in danger of waxing lyrical about the stunning scenery, beautiful peaks and the fabulous mountains of Snowdonia that are all on our doorstep. And we’re usually in no doubt about a walk, hill or trail to recommend to guests or customers if they want a spot of breathless adventure!

But what if one day we felt a little lazy and fancied a spot of armchair adventuring? Well, thanks to web giant Google, it could all be possible. Thanks to the expanded version of their Google Streetview service (a mapping website that allows you to zoom down to street level and virtually “walk” along the streets of the UK’s major towns and cities), wannabe mountaineers can enjoy a high adrenaline adventure without even leaving the comfort of their front room!

Google’s Streetview maps can now take you to the base camps of Everest (the highest mountain in the world), Kilimanjaro (the highest mountain in Africa), Aconcagua (the highest peak in the Americas) and Elbrus (the highest mountain in Europe).

Dedicated Google employees hiked to the base camps of all these mountains, in order to capture the stunning shots that make up the mapping website.  You can read the full story here or to check it out for yourself, just pop over to Google’s mapping page, search for the place of interest and then move the little yellow man to the main map (if the area/road is highlighted in blue then Streetview is available. If not, then it isn’t available yet).  As well as the world’s highest mountains, you can also take a trip down the Grand Canyon or a hike around the Big Apple. The world, is quite literally, your oyster!
