An inland hike to discover industrial Anglesey’s heritage at Parys Mountain on the beautiful island of Anglesey.

Start:                Amlwch Port Car Park (Leave A55 at second exit after bridge – signed for A5025. At roundabout before town turn right, follow to T-Junction at end. Turn right, then left down Quay Street. Turn second left down narrow road and park by quay)

Directions

1: Head away from sea following coast path back to Quay Street. Turn to left, cross street, head uphill past white cottage on left. Cross next road.

2: Walk along Llywelyn Street until gap in houses on right. Turn right, continue on footpath alongside Carmel Chapel.

3: Follow track and after passing house on right, fork left along grassy track and over stile. Continue down to field, following wall. At gap in wall on left turn right beside another wall and slightly uphill into field.

4: Bear left heading towards ladder stile at bottom left corner, then follow path up to gate near the white house. Keep house to right and continue ahead. Head downhill along gravel path to road.

5: Turn right and at footpath sign on left follow to stone step, then down ladder stile. Continue on path ahead beside wall. Over double stile, and cross next field to a farm track, turning left along it.

6: Through two gates and ahead through farm-yard. At gravel track follow uphill to road.

7: Turn right and soon cross to follow footpath on left between fields. Opposite second house on right, turn left. Keep mountain to right and follow main path around bottom to tarmac road.

8: Turn right, heading uphill along road. Turn right following signs for Brynparys Cottage. Pass cottage, over stile and down through gorse onto gravel path back towards mountain. Follow path, which leads to car park.

9: When you see car park gate ahead, leave main track and follow path to right. Shortly, take lower of two paths heading slightly uphill. At a fork, veer left, then at second fork head left again down narrow path heading towards stone engine house.

10: Pass engine house, turn left after barrier and follow track by cottage, passing crossroads to main road.

11: Cross road and continue ahead through two gates and over two stiles, following edge of field to next gate. Straight over here through gorse to bottom of field and through wooden gate. Don’t cross stile to next field, but ahead up grassy slope to path beside wall.

12: Veer left once past the gorse and along wall to gate. Turn right to another gate then left along gravel track then re-tracing steps to car-park.

Did you know…..

Amlwch is Wales’ most northerly town, and when production of copper from Parys Mountain was at its peak, it was the second largest town in Wales after Merthyr Tydfil. During this time, Amlwch was noted for its concentration of pubs; it is claimed that there was one pub in the town for every four residents!
