Borth-y-Gest

The next beautiful Snowdonia location in our “Day Out In….” series comes from the picturesque village of Borth-y-Gest, just a stone’s throw from the Oakeley Arms, and a mile from the town of Porthmadog.

Blink and you’ll miss this tiny coastal village, but there’s plenty to see and do here, although it’s best saved for a sunny day to see it in all it’s beauty!

There’s thought to have been a settlement in Borth-y-Gest for hundreds of years, but it only really grew up when the ship-building industry of Porthmadog spilled over into the village. The pretty bay made a perfect natural harbour, and by the mid eighteenth century there were several different ship builders in the village. Sailors’ and dock workers houses soon sprung up around the bay, with most of them still there today, retaining their original charm and features.

Today, Borth-y-Gest is a hive of activity in the summertime, when visitors flock to enjoy the fabulous beaches and beautiful views. It boasts a cafe, shop and restaurant as well as a thriving village school and active community. The Wales Coast Path goes directly through the village, so the coastal walking is superb.

You could just spend the day here enjoying the harbour and chilling on the beaches. And kids will love exploring the hidden coves, swimming in the shallows, crabbing in the harbour or discovering treasures in the rockpools.
