Well, who can believe it? We’re over half way through the month of August already; gosh, this summer is whizzing by isn’t it? And we know that this year the weather has been far from perfect, but a bit of drizzle hasn’t put a dampner on the brilliant summer holidays so far.

Sadly, although it’s the longest holiday month in the UK, August isn’t renowned for it’s glorious weather. August is often wetter, colder and windier than other summer months.But, bad weather isn’t the only thing that August is renowned for. Did you know……

• According to the Gregorian calendar, August is the 8th month of the year and it is 31 days long.
• It was named in honour of Augustsus, the founder of the Roman Empire.
• The birth flowers for August are the gladioli and the poppy.
• According to an ancient saying “if the first week of August be warm, the winter will be white and long”. Depends what you mean by warm really!!
• In the USA, August is National Peach Month?
• The BBC first transmitted television pictures during the month of August.
• Forget the Notting Hill Carnival or the Edinburgh Festival, August is the month for the National Eisteddfod here in Wales. It’s the country’s finest celebration of arts, culture and history. This year it was held near Welshpool in mid Wales.
• In 1762, the Earl of Sandwich was said to have created the sandwich on the 6th August. I wonder if he had any idea what he started? Cheese and pickle anyone?
• The Perseid Meteor Shower takes place during mid August. You can read our blog about it here….
• The 12th of August is the start of the Grouse shooting season in Britain; known as the “Glorious Twelfth.”
• On the 14th August in 1945 World War II officially ended.
• August 8th is Father’s Day in Taiwan.
• In 1941 on the 18th August, the National Fire Service was formed in Britain.
• And our favourite of all, on August 27th, it is National Burger Day. Bring it on!
