Learnin’ the Lingo

So, do you have an Autumn resolution? Something you want to get your teeth into once the balmy summer evenings and sunny BBQ days are over? Well, look no further! How about coming to learn Welsh with us here at the Oakeley Arms? The local college, Coleg Meirion Dwyfor are offering Welsh courses for all abilities – from beginners to the more advanced.

The Welsh language is thought to be the oldest language in Britain, dating back almost 4,000 years. Welsh originally came from one of the nine “Indo-European” groups of languages – Celtic. And from the ancient Celtic language, Welsh began to emerge in around the 6th century. Welsh is closely linked to the Breton and Cornish languages, although these aren’t widely spoken these days.

According to the most recent census data, around 20% of the total population can speak, read and write Welsh, with the vast majority of these concentrated in the North western and middle areas of Wales.

So, why not join in and become one of the Welsh speakers of Wales? Come and learn Welsh at the Oakeley Arms!

Classes for beginners start here at the Oakeley on the 16th September and will run for 32 weeks every Tuesday after that. Start time 17:00 until 19:00, and the total cost is just £66 for the course (50% concession available for over 60s and recipients of benefits. Check for details).
