Surf’s Up!

News reached us this week at the Oakeley Arms that we could soon be welcoming our very first surfing centre in Snowdonia. And no, it won’t, as you might expect, be based on the shores of the Llyn or on the beaches of Cardigan Bay, but instead a brand new custom-built “surfing lake” will be constructed almost 10 miles inland!

The specially designed surf Snowdonia lake will be built near the town of Dolgarrog, not far from Llanrwst on the site of an old factory. The lake will be almost as large as three football pitches, measuring 300m long and 100m wide. A special machine in the centre of the lake will generate up to 60 waves an hour. And because the machine can be carefully configured, the size, speed and length of each wave can be carefully controlled – making the lake suitable for every type of surfer, from beginners to pros!

North Wales is already known for it’s prime surfing spots along the coastline of the Llyn Peninsula, so this new surfing centre in Snowdonia will help to further put us on the surfing map. For the first time in history, surfers won’t have to wait for the ideal conditions and the right “surf” before heading out for training and practice – they will be able to book time at the surfing lake, turn up and surf! And this could revolutionise the sport of surfing – making it more accessible for more people, and easier to train and practice for the professionals.

The company behind the lake is Surf Snowdonia, and not only are they helping to firmly secure Snowdonia’s place on the adventure sports map (thanks to the buzzing outdoor industries here at the moment, with attractions like Zip World proving ever popular) but the new surf snowdonia lake will also provide jobs and prosperity to the area.
