Happy New Year
January 1st, 2014
Welcome to 2014
So, that’s 2013 done and dusted….. can you believe that another year has passed so quickly? Here at the Oakeley Arms 2013 has vanished in a blur of running our lovely hotel, meeting lots of fabulous new guests and customers and making sure we continue to be one of the finest hotels in Snowdonia. There have been loads of highlights for us here, and it got us to thinking about the top moments of the year for the nation. Here are our favourites….
- One of the media’s favourite stories of 2013 was of course the arrival of the latest royal, little Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge. It’s estimated that royal-baby-frenzy contributed a whopping $347 million to the world’s economy!
- The Oakeley Arms gained Casque Marque status, of which we are very proud indeed.
- Sadly, the world mourned a hero when Nelson Mandela died on the 5th December, aged 95. The news was sad, but Mandela’s legacy, honour and spirit were celebrated across the globe.
- In March, the final radio and television programmes were broadcast from the iconic BBC building Television Centre in London. After 43 years in the building, all operations were moved away from the site, with many being moved to the new facilities in Salford Quays near Manchester.
- The debate for Scottish independence intensifies, as the date for the vote is set for September 2014.
- Another icon of world politics, Margaret Thatcher passes away in April. Her state-funded funeral was a topic of hot debate.
- One of football’s most well-known faces Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson announced his retirement in May. His successor David Moyes has so far proved a controversial choice.
- Pop band One Direction’s album Midnight Memories was announced as 2013’s top-selling album.
- The UK enjoyed one of the hottest and sunniest summers for years, as many regions across the country (including us here in Snowdonia) basked in glorious sunshine for weeks on end.
Did we miss any out? And what were your highlights of 2013?
And there’s just one more thing to say, from all of us here at the Oakeley Arms, we’d like to wish all our lovely customers, friends, family, colleagues and suppliers a very happy new year and a prosperous, healthy and happy 2014. We look forward to seeing you soon!
