It is certainly true that beautiful Snowdon is most visited mountain in Wales, and with good reason. The highest peak in Wales attracts over half a million walkers, climbers and trekkers every year – who use the mountain’s numerous and well trodden paths to reach the summit, along with a well deserved sense of achievement and some of the finest views in the country (well, on a clear day that is….).

However, all those footsteps aren’t always such great news for the mountain’s footpaths. Although Snowdon is one of Britain’s most accessible mountains, with more than six well-known, and well-marked routes to the summit, the huge number of visitors it attracts each year can be a heavy burden on the mountain’s paths.

The footpaths of Snowdon are immensley popular, but this can mean they need frequent repair and maintenance.

And funding cuts to the Snowdonia National Park, the authority that looks after Snowdon and it’s paths, mean that it’s becoming more difficult than ever to repair and maintain the gorgeous routes up to Snowdon’s summit.

That’s why the BMC (British Mountaineering Council) have launched the Mend our Mountains campaign. It’s a fundraising appeal with a unique difference….. It will be launched via crowdfunding – a way of raising money online. Crowdfunding is different because for each donation pledged the donor receives something in return – in this case it will include outdoor experiences led by the famous faces of the campaign, including mountaineers Sir Chris Bonington and Doug Scott and television personality Julia Bradbury.

The BMC is hoping to raise over £100,000 for the Mend our Mountains campaign, and the total raised will be shared among numerous projects across Britain – including repairing the famous Watkin Path on Snowdon. Other projects will include repair work on Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons, Scafell Pike in the Lake District and peaks in the Yorkshire Dales.

This campaign is essential for the repair and maintenance of these famous mountain paths – without funding from Mend our Mountains, this work won’t be completed – and so could have sad consequences for visitor numbers to Snowdon, and other beautiful British peaks.
