Anglesey Newborough Walk
February 20th, 2016
Can you smell Spring in the air? Slowly but surely it seems to be getting warmer here in Snowdonia. The brave flowers are pushing through the cold earth and springing into life, and the sun is making a warm and welcome appearance every now and again.
So, what better time to head out into the great outdoors and explore some of our lovely wildnerness here in North Wales. For today’s blog we’ve got a fabulous walk for you on the island of Anglesey – just an hour’s drive from us here at the Oakeley Arms.
The beach and forest of Newborough is one of the most renowned on the island. It is home to the largest population of Anglesey’s red squirrels, as well as the stunning Llanddwyn Island.
So, pack your boots, fill a flask and explore this beautiful area…..

**Part of this walk crosses tidal areas – please check tide times before setting off and only proceed with the walk when the tide is out. Tide times can be checked at www.tidetimes.org.uk/bangor
Directions:
1: From the car park turn left and follow the signs for the Coast Path, with the lake and marsh to the right. Continue until you reach an information board and look for small gate on left. Go through it and follow way-marked path through the dunes for over a mile.
2: At the beach, the path ends so head across the beach in a south easterly direction – towards the left side of end of sand-dunes in distance – for about a mile.
**If the tide is coming in, is high or you are unsure, do not risk crossing the sands; turn left when you reach the beach to a way-marker post that marks a path heading to the left back across the dunes. Follow path to roundabout, turn left and walk along lane back to car-park.
3: When you reach the headland, turn right to go round/over it and walk along beach towards Llanddwyn Island in the distance with sand dunes on your right.
4: As you approach edge of woodland, look for path on right, signposted as Coast Path. Follow this back to car park. To explore the woodland, take any of the paths on the left and follow the signed tracks.
