“Head up to the mountains” we say…..

“What??”…….

That’s right! As well as all the other fantastic things you can do in the hills and mountains of Snowdonia, you can now go surfing….. yes, you read that right! At the weekend, the world’s first commercial artificial surfing lake (and the UK’s ONLY surfing lake) opened it’s doors (or should that be waves…) to the general public.

It’s a world first for Wales, and we think that is an incredible feat. Work began at the old industrial site at Dolgarrog in the Conwy Valley about 12 months ago, and the Surf Snowdonia team have succeeded in creating a world class attraction and sports venue that makes use of old wasteland. The build cost a whopping total of £12 million, but in the process the site has been completely cleaned up and over 100 years of industrial waste has been taken away or recycled into something more useful.

Surf Snowdonia is a huge oval shaped lagoon, roughly the size of 6 football pitches and containing 6 million gallons of fresh, Snowdonia water. Inside the pool is a clever wave machine which can generate different sized waves – for beginners and pro surfers alike. And as well as the main attraction there’s also a water obstacle course, a lovely lake-side bar and cafe, as well as a soft play centre for smaller children and a shop selling all things surf-related.

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Surf Snowdonia to the area and we think it will be a tremendous boost to the already fantastic repertoire of adventure activities that are already on offer in our lovely Snowdonia (you can read some of our previous blog posts about some of them here, here and here).
