World Water Day 2015
March 21st, 2015
Did you know that tomorrow (Sunday March 22nd) is World Water Day? We thought we’d celebrate this special day because here at the Oakeley Arms we’re surrounded by some of the most glorious water you’ll ever find – the Welsh coastline is renowned as some of the most stunning in Britain. And with good reason. There are 38 Blue Flag beaches in Wales; a Blue Flag Beach is the ultimate standard for water cleanliness in the UK.
So, we’re proud of the beautiful water we have here, not to mention the hundreds of miles of sparkling clear rivers we have in Snowdonia too. It seems we’re pretty spoilt when it comes to natural, fresh and clean water resources.
But, we know that millions of people around the world aren’t so lucky. According to water.org, one in nine people across the world (approx 750 million people) don’t have access to safe drinking water – a phenomenal number when you think that most of us take the fresh, safe and clean water that rushes from our taps for granted….. More than 2,000 people across the world die every day from illnesses caused by drinking unsafe water. This crises is deemed as the main risk to society.
World Water Day is celebrating it’s 22nd year in 2015. It was first observed in 1993 by the UN – a way to raise awareness about the world’s water – including problems and issues surrounding sustainability, resources and campaigns, as well as all the positive things about our brilliant planet’s water supply.
So, in honour of all things watery, and as thanks to our plentiful, fresh, mountain water here in Snowdonia (and indeed our very own spring water here at the Oakeley Arms), here are a few water based facts for you……
- The existence of water is essential to all life forms on earth.
- Water has three different states – liquid (water), solid (ice) and gas (steam)
- On average, every kg of seawater has 35g of salt in it
- Pure water has no smell or taste
- Water has a pH of 7
- Approximately 70% of an adult’s body is made up of water
- A healthy person can drink about 26 pints of water a day! But too much too quickly can lead to water intoxication
- Water dissolves more substances than any other liquid
- About 75% of the surface of the earth is covered in water
- But there is much more water stored underground than there is above ground
- The average British person uses about 300 pints of water a day – in drinking, cooking, washing and heating
