News reached us last week that our beloved mountain Snowdon is actually taller than we think; imagine that!

A group of ramblers, using new GPS measuring technology, set out on their task to get Snowdon re-measured and they found that it was actually 1 metre taller than is currently recorded by the OS. The Ordnance Survey mapping shows Wales’ highest peak to stand at 1,085 metres tall, but the three amateur measurers, John Barnard, Graham Jackson and Myrddyn Phillips found it to stand 1,086.

Although the extra metre comes from a man-made plinth that was added to the summit in 2009, so the Ordnance Survey have advised that they will not be changing their records, as the natural summit remains the same height.

However, it does mean that the thousands of hikers who make their way to Snowdon’s peak every year will have to walk that little bit further to reach their goal. But never mind, surely an extra metre of hill-walking is equal to an extra pint in the Oakeley Bar afterwards? Of course it does!

The team of amateur mountain measurers have so far re-measured over 150 hills in England and Wales since 2008, so they are pretty dedicated (and perhaps, fit!).
