Criccieth Sunset Walk

This stunning walk along the Welsh Coast Path in Criccieth is a short drive from us here at the Oakeley Arms. It’s well worth exploring the town too, and if you time it right then the sunset over the west coastline of Wales is to die for! Happy walking 🙂

Start:                Small car park at West Parade (at the westerly end of Marine Terrace – leave the A487 at the westerly end of the village and turn down Lôn Fel. Continue to bottom of road to find car park ahead opposite hotel building.) Nearest postcode for sat nav is LL52 0EN (approx)

Directions:

1: Face the sea, turn right to follow the tarmac path. Soon reach a Coast Path way-marker. Continue ahead along path above beach with a fence to the right.

2: Eventually go through gate and stay ahead. At cottage follow path as it veers, then turn left at way marker.

3: The path soon drops to beach, bear right along it (if high tide, stay ahead for path at top). Walk along high tide line around pebbly headland and see mouth of the river Dwyryd ahead after corner. Don’t cross river but bear right passing short sandy cliffs and find grassy path by river. Follow this now with the river to the left.

4: Eventually go through gate, along boardwalk and continue. Veer right just before stone platform to go through gate.

5: Follow field edge, keeping fence on left. Through gate and turn right, follow way-markers. Stay on this track as it leaves field towards railway line. Over stile then railway with care.

6: Stay ahead, cross another stile and follow track towards farm house. Through gates (or stile if closed) and follow concrete lane passing cottages then farm buildings. Eventually reach main road and cross carefully to go through small gate ahead; continue along the narrow lane between houses.

7: Turn left then immediately right at signpost for Lloyd George’s grave. Reach turning for the grave on left, and explore. Leave grave and turn left to continue along lane. Follow this road for almost a mile and a half, passing Tŷ Newydd.

8: Eventually at 30 mph road signs with a housing estate ahead, turn right (signposted for the #8 cycle route). Continue on this lane to eventually meet main road. Cross it and bear slightly left and then turn right down Lon Fêl at signpost for beach and castle. Go over railway, pass scout hut and follow road towards sea back to car park.
