If you think of a luxury car brand then no doubt that the beautiful Rolls-Royce engines will be one of the first things to pop into your head. These iconic cars have been gracing our roads since 1904 – and they’ve even been here to visit us at the Oakeley Arms…. join us as we find out more!
In the early 1900’s, Henry Royce was one of the front runners of innovative automotive engineering and design. In 1904 he produced his first car, from his factory in Manchester and soon after was introduced to car dealer Charles Rolls. Rolls was so impressed with Royce’s car that he agreed to sell all he could produce. And so, in 1906 the brand Rolls-Royce was formed. They quickly became synonymous with luxury cars and innovative engineering, and the company expanded to produce cars during the first and second world wars, as well as aircraft. In the 1930’s they bought out the struggling Bentley car brand, securing their position as the finest car producer in the world.
Despite the usual ups and downs of a long-running company, Rolls-Royce still remain one of the largest producers of luxury cars in the world, and the iconic brand is globally revered. So, it was no surprise when in the 1950’s, an advert was put into the local press in Oxfordshire, proposing the formation of a Club for the owners of Rolls-Royce motor cars. Eleven people responded and a meeting took place on a farm near Oxford. Little more than a month later, fourteen cars attended the Club‘s first event, and the International Club for Rolls-Royce and Bentley Enthusiasts was born.
Over the next three years, membership grew to over 100, and the Club’s magazine, ‘The Bulletin’ was published and the club became a meeting point for enthusiasts and owners all over the world. The club is still going strong today, with club events hosted throughout the year. One of the most popular events is the annual Welsh Weekend – where the club members and car owners bring their prized cars to a different location in Wales each year and show off their beautiful vintage and iconic vehicles. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Welsh Weekend, and can you guess where they very first one was held? Yes! Right here at the Oakeley Arms Hotel in 1969.
We’d love to see the beautiful Rolls-Royce cars back here at the Oakeley Arms, so if anyone from the owners Club is reading this then please get in touch for your next event! We’d love to have you back!
